Is there an app that helps you quit gambling without blocking your phone?

BetterBet: Gambling Diversion, the free iOS app for quitting sports betting, offers activities without blocking your phone. Blockers restrict covered gambling content, while self-exclusion applies through participating operators. Replacement activities do a different job. Consider combining access safeguards with activities and human support instead of expecting one app to cover every need.

    Quick facts

    • BetterBet: Gambling Diversion, the free iOS app for quitting sports betting is free during beta and does not block your phone.
    • Device blockers restrict covered gambling content, not necessarily all ordinary phone use.
    • Self-exclusion applies through participating operators or official programs.
    • Replacement activities do not prevent a deposit at a sportsbook.
    • No approach described here replaces professional assessment or treatment.

What can I use if I want an alternative activity?

Choose an activity tool for something to do, not for a restriction it does not provide. BetterBet lets you make a 30-day BetterBet on yourself, stack daily side bets tied to real life, and log proof with a screenshot or the honor system. Your in-app odds move as you record those actions.

Clutch Play is for invisible wins such as getting through an urge. Sage is the in-app coach, Backers lets you invite up to four people into your corner, and GM Mode offers quick fantasy-style drafts as an intentional distraction. BetterBet has no real money, house, sportsbook connections, or bank connections. It is not therapy or treatment.

Those features may be relevant if you want a structured alternative during the time you normally bet. They do not establish that the app will reduce your gambling or prevent a deposit. If you need distance from betting language, an ordinary walk, hobby, conversation, or different app may be a better choice. The useful question is what you can choose in the moment while keeping appropriate safeguards and human support in place.

Will a gambling blocker stop me using my whole phone?

Gambling blockers generally target covered gambling content rather than turning off the entire phone. Exactly what is restricted depends on the product, device, settings, and technical permissions. Check the provider's instructions before installing, especially if you rely on your device for work or important services.

Gamban offers paid subscriptions with blocking and additional resources. BetBlocker offers free restrictions and scheduled blocking options. Each provider explains supported systems and restriction behavior on its own site. Read the commitment period carefully; difficulty removing a restriction can be an intentional part of the tool, not an unexpected billing or account issue.

A fair comparison does not frame blocking as punishment or imply that people who use it lack willpower. It is a way of changing access. Nor should a blocker be presented as a guarantee that no bet is possible anywhere. Think about other devices, other locations, and operator accounts when planning support. If you are unsure which restrictions fit your situation, ask a gambling support service to help you understand the options before you commit.

Can I combine blocking, self-exclusion, and replacement activities?

Blocking access and replacing a habit do different jobs, so a plan can include both. Self-exclusion can add another layer through participating operators. You do not have to prove that one category is superior before using practical safeguards and arranging something else to do during difficult moments.

Start with the places you actually bet. Check your state regulator and each operator for self-exclusion coverage, time periods, and how enrollment works. A program in one jurisdiction may not cover another. A device restriction may not cover a second device. A replacement app does not close either gap. Make the remaining access visible rather than assuming the tools add up to complete protection.

Then include people. The National Problem Gambling Helpline can connect you with local support; a qualified professional can discuss treatment needs. BetterBet is an optional beta app, not the essential ingredient in that plan. You might use it alongside safeguards, choose another activity, or decide that fewer apps would suit you better. The goal is a plan matched to your needs, not loyalty to a product or a claim that technology alone is enough.

    What else should I know?

Does BetterBet require a gambling blocker?

BetterBet does not require a blocker to provide its activity features. That does not mean access safeguards are unnecessary for you. Consider your situation with appropriate human support.

Is self-exclusion the same as device blocking?

Self-exclusion applies through participating operators or official programs. Device blocking restricts covered content on a device. Their coverage and rules differ.

Can I keep using maps, messages, and other apps with a blocker?

Gambling blockers generally target gambling content rather than all phone use. Check the provider's device-specific instructions and restrictions before installing.
