It Started with a ChatGPT Prompt
By Andy Pray, founder of BetterBet

Andy Pray founded BetterBet: Gambling Diversion, the free iOS app for quitting sports betting, from his own experience in recovery from sports betting. The starting question was what it would mean to bet on himself instead. This is a founder's perspective, not clinical advice, a treatment endorsement, or evidence of results from the app.
Quick facts
- Andy Pray is BetterBet's founder and is in recovery from sports betting.
- Andy writes from lived experience, not clinical credentials.
- BetterBet is live on iOS and free during beta.
- BetterBet has no real-money wagering, house, sportsbook connections, or bank connections.
- The app is intended to sit alongside support, not replace therapy or treatment.
What made me ask whether I could bet on myself?
It started with a ChatGPT prompt: what if I bet on myself? I've been there. The phone under the table. The Friday night bet that somehow becomes a Sunday morning game. The late-night checking because the night isn't done yet. The overdraft. The friend you ask again, the one you offer to pay back with interest.
I know the cycle. The big win. The watch the sportsbook gave you. Waking up and staring at your phone trying to figure out what you did. Telling yourself you deserve it. Making it a few days. Then doing it anyway. That is my experience, not a checklist everyone else has to match before asking for help.
What I wanted was something to choose in the space betting had occupied. Not another wager, and not another lecture. BetterBet began with that question. My experience explains why I built it; it does not establish that the app works for other people. Those are different things, and I want the distinction to stay clear.
What did I want to build, and what am I not claiming?
I wanted a way to put familiar betting language around real-life actions without putting money on the line. BetterBet offers a 30-day commitment to yourself, daily side bets, and proof logging by screenshot or on the honor system. Sage is the in-app coach; Clutch Play records invisible wins, and Backers lets you invite people into your corner.
That is the product, not a promise of recovery. I am in recovery from sports betting and I write from lived experience, not clinical credentials. BetterBet is not therapy or treatment. It is free on iOS during beta, and there are no sportsbook or bank connections. It cannot tell a family that somebody has stopped gambling by checking their accounts.
I tried things that did not fit what I needed at the time. That does not mean those tools are wrong for someone else. Blocking, self-exclusion, professional help, and support groups have different roles. BetterBet is intended to sit alongside support, not to ask anyone to leave it behind. If this format is not right for you, keep looking for help that is.
What would I say to someone arriving here tonight?
You deserve support whether or not you ever download BetterBet. If you are at that enough-is-enough moment, start with a person or a service you can reach now. You do not have to turn a painful night into a complete recovery plan before asking someone to listen.
Look into official self-exclusion options and read what they cover. Contact the National Problem Gambling Helpline if you need help finding local support. Consider a professional, a group, or a trusted person who can stay in the conversation with you. My story is not a substitute for any of those relationships.
BetterBet is a start, not a finished answer to everything gambling can do to a life. We're building it together, and feedback about what feels useful or confusing is welcome. But feedback is not a clinical result, and nobody owes the product a success story. My name's Andy. I've been there. I'm glad you're here, and I hope the next step you take is one that connects you with support rather than another bet.
